Scientific Background - Ribbond

These published articles describe some the scientific basis for the clinical applications of Ribbond Bondable Reinforcement Ribbon.

The following articles are by Prof Sema Belli et al.

The common feature in all of these studies was that almost all of the Ribbond augmented tooth samples in all of the studies failed in such a manner that they could be retreated after the samples were broken. Conversely, almost all of the non-Ribbond augmented tooth samples failed catastrophically and could not be retreated. This is a classical example of what is referred to in industrial applications as “fail safe” design.

Reattached lingual cusps fracture resistance. The fracture resistance of teeth with reattached lingual cusps lined with Ribbond was found to be simmilar to that of the nonfractured samples”  The clinical significance of this is that the Ribbond liner bridges the cracks that are commonly seen in the pulpal floor of teeth that have had old amalgam restorations. The closely bonded Ribbond liner restores these teeth to the fracture resistance level of teeth that are free of such cracks.

The effect on C-factor. Ribbond significantly increased the microtensile bond strength when it was used as a liner in the base of cavities with a high c-factor. This has been clinically demonstrated to avoid the problems that commonly occur in high c-factor situations.

Cross cusp splinting. When compared to a standard bulk filling technique in an MOD restoration, Ribbond significantly increased the fracture strength when it was used as a liner below the composite restoration. It increased the fracture strength 61% when it was used as a cross cusp B-L splint under the occlusal surface. The cross cusp B-L splinting has clinically been demonstrated to be very effective in treating split tooth syndrome

Biomechanical Properties and Clinical Use of a Polyethylene Fiber Post-core Material. This article is the first technique chapter in the 2008 Prof. Marco Ferrari text, Fiber Posts and Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Compendium of Scientific and Clinical Perspectives. It describes the performance properties and characteristics of Ribbond, and the technique for using it to construct post-core restorations.

Microleakage in Overflared Root Canals Restored with Different Fiber Reinforced Dowels. This article and additional photos provide photographs and SEMs of the most extreme hi c-factor environment, the inside of endodontic canals. This is easily seen in this study as the infiltration of the dye into the gaps between the luting resin and the canal walls. These gaps may later lead to microleakage and failure. As stated in the introduction, it is commonly recognized that the degree of polymerization shrinkage is strongly related to the volume of luting resin between the post system and the canal walls. Since the Ribbond system is the only system that is closely adapted to the canal walls, it therefore contains the least resin volume to shrink between the post and the canal walls.
